Farewell, my stomach is a news story full of generosity and humanity, which demonstrates the power of science in everyday people’s lives. It features scientists, physicians and a Portuguese family in the North part of the country that are fighting a rare disease.
Ana, Isaura and Jorge welcomed us at their home in January 2023 and shared with great generosity the courage of Rafael as well as their farewells and hopes.
Scientists worldwide are researching the genetic basis of a rare syndrome since the 1990’s. Portuguese scientists and physicians at Institute for Innovation and Research in Health (i3S) – Oporto University have been part of this syndrome research collective effort. An inspiring example of how scientist’s curiosity and endeavour, beginning at the lab, can save many lives.
